CCS Family Visits

Students in 5th and 6th grade at Central Christian School have committed to starting vegetable seedlings for the gardens of Harvest Ministry. This is a tangible manifestation of part of the school’s mission statement which is instilling a “Zeal to Serve”!

With spring knocking on our door and a greenhouse recently erected in the school’s back yard, the next step is deciding what to grow.

A CCS student suggested we take a survey of our families and in essence, that is what we have done.

When we meet a family and build a raised bed, the family shares their vegetable preferences so we learn what families from different regions or cultures like to grow and eat. CCS has also invited these families to visit the school so students can know personally the people for whom they are starting seedlings and what these families enjoy.

Recently, Maya from Bhutan visited the students and here is a bit of her story:

Abandoned by her father in Bhutan and forced to flee due to ethnic cleansing and civil war, Maya fled on foot to a refugee camp in Nepal where for 20 years she ate only rice, with occasional potatoes and lentils,  Her mother was only allotted 5 gallons of water per day (for cleaning, cooking, drinking and bathing).  Maya was born a Hindu  and it was in the refugee camp that she became a Christian through the work of missionaries.  She was effusive with the students about the blessings in her life now: - citizenship, appropriate clothes, a sturdy home, electricity, a job, etc.

"God can do anything. He is the only boss in our lives. If you go through hardship, sometimes God wants you to go through hardship to receive the good things."

BTW, Maya’s family grows lots of mustard greens and chilies.
